[Issue draft] Make it possible for users to manage taxa and taxa lists as scale #1015

Notes

  • The current workflow for importing taxa starts with a CSV that Anna and Michael first cleans up (in both manual and automated ways). Then we use management scripts to import taxa in bulk.
  • Handling taxa from management scripts or Django admin is not a scalable solution
  • Before we can trigger post processing from UI that involves taxa lists, we need a way for users to create and edit taxa lists
  • Taxonomy is tricky (there is not one single source of truth)
  • How can we give users more independence without ending up with chaos?
  • ML researchers uses GBIF since this is where they can get training data, entomologists often thinks GBIF taxonomy is outdated. When taxa is missing, entomologists will lose a bit of trust.
  • To design a practical workflow to manage taxa and taxa lists is not just about building a interface for the backend. We have to consider the big picture.
  • Start by defining a long term plan, then sub tasks to get there. Not everything can happen this sprint.
  • Taxonomy meeting with Anna, Michael, Max and Kent?
  • Use GBIF taxonomy as the backbone, make it possible to add custom taxa with references
  • Dashboard to curate taxa (for selected users)
  • iNat and BOLD
