Description
Notes
- The current workflow for importing taxa starts with a CSV that Anna and Michael first cleans up (in both manual and automated ways). Then we use management scripts to import taxa in bulk.
- Handling taxa from management scripts or Django admin is not a scalable solution
- Before we can trigger post processing from UI that involves taxa lists, we need a way for users to create and edit taxa lists
- Taxonomy is tricky (there is not one single source of truth)
- How can we give users more independence without ending up with chaos?
- ML researchers uses GBIF since this is where they can get training data, entomologists often thinks GBIF taxonomy is outdated. When taxa is missing, entomologists will lose a bit of trust.
- To design a practical workflow to manage taxa and taxa lists is not just about building a interface for the backend. We have to consider the big picture.
- Start by defining a long term plan, then sub tasks to get there. Not everything can happen this sprint.
- Taxonomy meeting with Anna, Michael, Max and Kent?
- Use GBIF taxonomy as the backbone, make it possible to add custom taxa with references
- Dashboard to curate taxa (for selected users)
- iNat and BOLD
