Can't read standard input or get parameters

The hooks doc https://git-scm.com/docs/githooks referenced that information on was is happenning on hook command can be passed as script parameter or standard input.

I'm interested for le pre-push hook:

he hook is called with two parameters which provide the name and location of the destination remote

Information about what is to be pushed is provided on the hook’s standard input with lines of the form:

<local-ref> SP <local-object-name> SP <remote-ref> SP <remote-object-name> LF

I tried to read script parameters or read standard input input a shell variable, but I can't seem to get anything useful. Is there something I miss, or maybe those are simply not available ?
