This allows for the same environment to run on a compute node (where mpi4py should work) and a login node (where mpi4py often doesn't work) on HPC systems.

This PR corresponds to the patch in conda-forge/distarray-feedstock#4. The changes are equivalent to CDAT/cdms#428 and CDAT/cdms#438 in cdms2, and uses the same flag |
