This PR is based on Modernize with a single controversial commit:

  • Stop using Matrix and Vector from stdlib.
  • Monkeypatching Vector to allow mutation seems questionable.
  • Just use Array instead

The code is now simpler and results in > 50% performance boost in benchmark/ips numbers.
